The well-labeled pictures take center stage, while simple, declarative sentences assist in emerging readers as they make their way through the book. A beginning photo-glossary provides structure and a preview of what’s to come, and the animals included vary interestingly: a pug has a short nose and a horse has a long one, but the anteater (“This nose sniffs”) and star-nosed mole (“This nose feels”) use their snouts in intriguing ways. Clear, repetitive text and a simple index and review section introduce a new audience to the basics of nonfiction, and the animal pictures, adorable and unusual, will do much to engage. —Maggie Reagan
